'To Give Painless Light' – A Selection of Poems by LJS

Poem 98: Fragment

Below them the enchanted forest was a vast carpet of alternating geens
and greys, almost a breathing movement of contrasts as the River of Doth
winding southwards appeared as a ribbon of cleanly bright silver in the
early morning light. Softly the wizard asked ‘why do you cry my son ?”
Rael turned his gaze from the forest, and with all the power of the firstborn
of his kind shining from his golden eyes, he said ” I am crying for the beauty
of this world ” because you have come to destroy it ?” asked the wizard,
“no” replied Rael “because I have come to save it”, and to the wizard his
voice sounded as though it had travelled from a place many stars distant
from this time, and although momentarily stopping was even now preparing
for a journey to a point that existed only in the wizards greatest imagining.
Rael turned around twice and stood still with his back to the sun, and the
wizard noticed with a slight shiver that night was already falling.
