'To Give Painless Light' – A Selection of Poems by LJS

Poem 49: Letter to S (I saw today)

A girl child examining the colours of a recently grazed knee.

A shallow green lake boasting ownership of half a bedframe

A group of cows waiting patiently as ever for the morning
and or the afternoon or the evening.

A sudden view of night yellow street lights speeding the
homeward journey.

A thought that the sides of hospital beds know more about
pain than the doctors.

A drunk in a long overcoat asking every other person
if they have the time.

A first visit to the zoo and a child knows that wild animals
live in cages.

A young path that clings to the side of a small hill.

A girl in a blue dress who reminded me of you and
a promise to write letters.
