Poem 18: I Have Knelt
I have shaken the tree
and from its roots
felt the earth tremble
I have heard the waterfall sing
and seen the mountain
divided by its song
I have danced with the flame
and cried for her
absence in the morning
I have called the night horseman
and did not see him
disguise the angel
I have felt the knife edge crumble
and watched its dust
separate wood and carving
I have held the childs hand
and because he was blind
could not find my own body
I have kissed the light above you
and have not dared
to learn your name
I have knelt before men
and have prayed to kneel
standing before God
